Some chemistry-climate models underestimate the total atmospheric ozone over the polar region in the Southern Hemisphere. A possible solution is to more accurately model the photodissociation processes. This study presents the results of installing a new module for calculating photolysis rates Cloud-J v.8.0 into the chemistry-climate model SOCOL v.3.

Cloud-J v.8.0 is a broadband algorithm for calculating photolysis rates in the presence of cloud and aerosol layers, which allows simulating global atmospheric photochemistry by directly including the physical properties of scattering and absorbing particles.

The results show that installing Cloud-J v.8.0 improves the accuracy of photolysis rate calculations and improves the model representation of the annual ozone cycle over the southern polar region.
