Automated method for assessment of ionosphere state based on ionosonde data
ISARD-2025-remote001
The paper suggests a new automated method for assessment of the ionosphere state based on the data of ground vertical radio sounding data. Monitoring of the near-Earth space is a topical problem and is aimed at preventing the negative impact of space weather anomalous factors on technical means and space infrastructure [1, 2]. This work continues the investigations [3, 4] and is focused on the creation of automated methods for geophysical monitoring data analysis and space weather forecast. The method is built on the synthesis of the elements of statistical solutions theory and threshold estimates with the methods of wavelet transform. The method provides the control of ionosphere state (at data recording site) and detection of ionospheric disturbances (inhomogeneities). The output results of the method performance are the data on ionosphere state (calm/disturbed) and the parameters of detected ionospheric inhomogeneities in case of the disturbed state. Intensity, inhomogeneity duration and character (positive of negative phase) are assessed. The advantage of the method, if compared with analogues, is its adaptive properties providing automatic adjustment of the parameters (does not require preliminary training). Another advantage of the method is the possibility to use it in case of data limited samples. The method was tested using the ionospheric layer F2 critical frequency data obtained by the vertical radio sounding of the ionospheric stations located in Kamchatka region (site coordinates 53о N and 158о E, Russia, IKIR FEB RAS) and Wakkanai (site coordinates 45о N and 141о E, Japan, WDC-ISW, NICT). Ionosphere behavior was investigated during increased solar activity and geomagnetic storms. Events of 2018-2023 were under analysis. The method efficiency was confirmed experimentally.
The work was supported by the State Task of IKIR FEB RAS (Subject No. 124012300245-2).
The authors appreciate the organizations, the data of which were used in the investigation.
